To get your ketone levels in your blood, you need to have a blood ketone meter first. It is a meter that is kind of expensive but gives accurate results. Even better, you will find it easy to use. If this is your first time trying a blood ketone meter, you can do the following:
- Make sure that you wash your hands properly. Dry these afterward.
- Then, carefully load the lancet using a needle. You can check the instructions at the back if you are not so sure.
- Slowly place the ketone strips into the meter. Then, prick your finger through the lancet.
- Make sure the strip gets in contact when your blood drops.
- Take a moment for the device to read the ketone levels.
- Then throw away the lancet and the strip.
In the event that you get a high ketone level, immediately head to your doctor. It can be an indication that you have type 1 diabetes. Take note that an optimal ketone level is 1.6 to 2.9 mmol. Low ketone level is at 0.5 mmol while high ketone level is considered at 3.0 mmol.

Do you really have to undergo a keto blood meter?
While keto blood meter can be important in determining your ketone level, there have been users who do not agree that it is necessary during a keto diet. Here are some of the reasons why:

As mentioned before, blood meters are costly. Some say that each strip costs around US$4. But you are not just testing your ketone level one time, you need to do it several times! There are even those who are willing to invest thousands for those.
Not that accurate
As compared with the other ketone level tests, blood tests have the most accurate results. But be wary, though, your blood ketones can be lower in the morning and high in the evening. In this case, you might end up choosing the time of the test which would make the result inaccurate.
In this case, it would be best if you use a keto meter if this is your first time trying a keto diet. It can be helpful for your health to check your ketone levels every once in a while. But if you think that you no longer need the meter and that you can already check your ketone level based on what you feel, then you can go on with your diet without it.
But then again, how will you know if your ketone level is already good without the meter? Studies show that you can detect the level based on what you feel. Most of the time, when you are in ketosis, you will feel mentally sharp and relaxed. You will even feel energetic the whole day without being the need to be hungry.
However, when you constantly feel hungry and looking for sweets, then you are still not in ketosis. This just means that your body is still burning sugar and not fat. Also, you can check your breath from time to time. An indication that you are already in ketosis is when your breath smells fruity. You might even smell that in urine or sweat.
